Abstract
Objectives: There have been many researches on the deficit syndrome in schizophrenia, which is characterized by primary and enduring negative symptoms. Schedule for the deficit syndrome(SDS) was developed to categorize patients with schizophrenia into deficit and nondeficit group and reported as a valid tool. But, Korean version of SDS(K-SDS) is neither developed nor standardized yet in Korea. Authors developed K-SDS and assessed the reliability and validity of it.

Methods: Using K-SDS, two raters assessed patients who met DSM-¥³ criteria for schizophrenia. Patients were inpatients in Gong-Ju National Hospital. Interrater reliability was calculated based on the results of the assessment. Rank-order correlations among the six negatives symptoms were analyzed to examine the cohesiveness of the construct.

Results: Sociodemographic data showed no significant differences between deficit and non-deficit group. The (unweighted) kappa value for the simple global categorization was 0.749. The correlation among six negative symptoms were relatively high and relatively homogeneous.

Conclusion: K-SDS is a reliable and valid tool for diagnosis of the deficit syndrome in schizophrenia.
